귀에 익숙한 음악 'The lion sleep tonight'. 제목만 들어도 아시는 분은 아실 것입니다. 바로 애니메이션 '라이언킹'에서 OST로 쓰였던 음악이죠. 하지만 올드팝임을 모르시는 분들도 많으시더군요. 물론 저도 그랬구요. 이 노래는 1961년도 12월 18일 부터 3주간 빌 보드 챠트 1위에 머문 곡입니다. 가수는 'The tokens'인데 모르시는 분들을 위해 간단한 소개를 해 드리겠습니다.
The original version of the group was formed in 1955 at Brooklyn's Abraham Lincoln High School. Featuring Neil Sedaka, Hank Medress, Eddie Rabkin, and Cynthia Zolotin, the group was known as the Linc-Tones. After Rabkin was replaced by Jay Siegel in 1956, the Linc-Tones recorded their first single, While I Dream (Neil Sedaka sang lead). The next year, Sedaka and Zolotin left the band; Sedaka would go on to make a name for himself as a popular solo artist, and singer-songwriter, during the 1960s and 1970s. Meanwhile, in 1957, Jay and Hank, with two new members, recorded "Picture in my Wallet" as Darrell & the Oxfords, and in 1959 "Come Dance With Me", both featuring Jay Siegel on lead vocals. By 1960, the classic group line-up, now renamed the Tokens, was in place, consisting of Siegel, Medress, and brothers 13-year-old multi-instrumentalist and first tenor Mitch Margo, with baritone brother Phil Margo, nee Margolis.
